Exhibition: September 30-December 18, 2005

About the publication

Historically, the work of painters working in Denmark in the nineteenth century have been eclipsed by their larger neighbors to the south and east. They, nevertheless, developed a distinctive approach to the traditions of still-life, portraiture, and, particularly landscape. This exhibition of almost forty superb examples of Danish painting was selected from the extensive collection of John L. Loeb, Jr., which had its genesis during his tenure as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark during the Reagan administration. The Loeb collection is considered one of the best of its kind and features key works by artists rarely seen outside of Denmark such as interiors by Vilhelm Hammershøi; Peder Krøyer’s Self-Portrait Sitting by his Easel at Skagen Beach; Johan Laurentz Jensen’s vibrant still-life and floral paintings; and Jens Juel’s society portraits.

The exhibition was organized by the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science, Greenwich, Connecticut, and accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue.
