About the publication

This exhibition explores the changing image of New York City in the art and photography of a vibrant era, spanning the period from the Armory Show of 1913 to the international triumph of the "New York School" in the 1950s. So vast and quick-changing that it defied traditional means of portrayal, the ultimate "modern metropolis"spurred artists from around the world to forge new modes of urban imagination and to invent artistic techniques equal to the richness of their surroundings. Works from the permanent collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center are joined by loans from thirteen public and private collections in this survey of New York's meteoric career. This brochure features essays by curators Joel Smith and Patricia Phagan, a complete checklist, and color illustrations of the work of 45 of the artists in the exhibition, including Man Ray, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Steichen, Stuart Davis, Margaret Bourke-White, Joseph Stella, Lewis Hine, and Alfred Stieglitz.
